Proper care helps preserve the shine, colour and beautiful appearance of your jewellery for as long as possible. The durability of a piece depends on its material, surface finish, how often it is worn and its exposure to moisture, cosmetics and chemicals.

The most important rule is simple: put your jewellery on last and take it off first.

JEWELLERY WEARING TIPS

To help maintain the beautiful appearance of your jewellery:

  • put jewellery on after applying perfume, creams, hairspray and other cosmetic products;
  • remove jewellery before sleeping, exercising, washing, using a sauna or swimming;
  • protect jewellery from cleaning products, chlorine and other chemicals;
  • avoid dropping, knocking, bending or heavily rubbing your jewellery;
  • never pull jewellery by a stone, pearl, pendant or other decorative element;
  • make sure jewellery does not catch on clothing, hair or other jewellery;
  • wipe jewellery with a soft, dry cloth after wearing;
  • store different pieces separately whenever possible.

WHICH CLEANING METHODS SHOULD I AVOID?

Do not use the following to clean jewellery:

  • toothpaste;
  • baking soda;
  • rough brushes or sponges;
  • abrasive cleaning powders;
  • strong household cleaning products;
  • bleach or products containing chlorine;
  • homemade cleaning mixtures or products with unknown ingredients.

These may scratch the metal, damage surface finishes, alter the appearance of stones or weaken glued details.

Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning unless you are certain that it is suitable for the specific materials, stones and settings used in the jewellery.

WHEN SHOULD I STOP WEARING A PIECE OF JEWELLERY?

Stop wearing the jewellery if you notice:

  • a moving or loose stone;
  • a damaged stone setting;
  • a broken or poorly closing clasp;
  • a broken or stretched chain;
  • jewellery that has become bent;
  • a sharp or loose component;
  • any other damage that may worsen with continued wear.

Do not attempt to glue, bend or repair damaged jewellery yourself.

If you notice any of these issues, stop wearing the jewellery and consult a jeweller.

HOW SHOULD JEWELLERY BE STORED?

Store jewellery in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight.

The bathroom is not a suitable place to store jewellery because humidity levels are usually high.

Ideally, store each piece separately:

  • in a separate compartment of a jewellery box;
  • in a soft pouch;
  • in a dry, sealable jewellery pouch;
  • in a jewellery box.

For longer-term storage, we recommend keeping jewellery in its original box or in a jewellery box made from materials suitable for jewellery storage. Adhesives and other materials used in unsuitable boxes may contribute to the oxidation and tarnishing of silver.

Before storing jewellery, make sure it is completely dry.

Fasten necklace and bracelet clasps before storage to help prevent chains from becoming tangled.

For longer-term storage, silver jewellery may be placed in a separate sealable pouch to reduce exposure to air and moisture.

WHY CAN JEWELLERY TARNISH, FADE OR CHANGE COLOUR OVER TIME?

The appearance of jewellery may be affected by:

  • skin pH and perspiration;
  • humidity;
  • perfume, creams and cosmetics;
  • cleaning products;
  • seawater and chlorinated water;
  • friction;
  • how frequently the jewellery is worn;
  • how the jewellery is stored.

The natural tarnishing of silver and gradual wear of surface coatings are normal characteristics of these materials and do not automatically indicate poor product quality.

Different people may experience different levels of wear with the same material. As a result, the durability of the colour and surface finish may vary from one wearer to another.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHECK MY JEWELLERY?

Regularly inspect jewellery that you wear frequently.

Check:

  • that stones and their settings are secure;
  • that earring backs and clasps close securely;
  • that necklace and bracelet clasps work correctly;
  • that chain links are not stretched or damaged;
  • that rings have not become bent.

It is especially important to check jewellery with stones after it has been dropped, knocked or caught on clothing.

CARE FOR DIFFERENT MATERIALS

METALS AND SURFACE FINISHES

CARE FOR RHODIUM-PLATED 925 STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY

Rhodium plating gives silver jewellery a bright, even surface and helps slow down the natural tarnishing of silver.

The surface coating may gradually become thinner over time due to frequent wear and friction. The areas that usually experience the most wear are the undersides of rings, chain clasps and other surfaces that frequently come into contact with the skin or objects.

To care for rhodium-plated jewellery:

  • use a soft, dry cloth;
  • avoid vigorous polishing;
  • do not use abrasive cleaning products;
  • protect jewellery from chemicals and cosmetic products;
  • remove jewellery before washing, exercising and sleeping.

CARE FOR GOLD-PLATED AND ROSE GOLD-PLATED SILVER JEWELLERY

Gold-plated jewellery is made from 925 sterling silver with a thin layer of gold applied to its surface.

The durability of the coating is affected by how often the jewellery is worn, friction, moisture, perspiration, cosmetic products and the characteristics of the wearer’s skin.

To help preserve the appearance of gold-plated jewellery:

  • remove jewellery before washing, exercising, sleeping, using a sauna or swimming;
  • avoid contact with perfume, creams, hairspray and cleaning products;
  • clean jewellery only with a soft, dry cloth;
  • do not use silver cleaning liquid;
  • do not rub jewellery vigorously with a polishing cloth;
  • store jewellery separately from other pieces.

Gradual wear of the surface coating is a natural characteristic of plated jewellery. The coating on rings and bracelets may wear more quickly than on earrings or necklaces.

CARE FOR BLACK RHODIUM-PLATED JEWELLERY

Black rhodium-plated jewellery requires particularly gentle handling because wear on the dark surface may be more noticeable against the lighter base material underneath.

Clean the jewellery only with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use a silver polishing cloth, abrasive products or vigorous rubbing, as these may remove the dark surface layer.

CARE FOR STAINLESS STEEL JEWELLERY

Stainless steel jewellery is more durable and requires less maintenance. If a product is marked as “waterproof”, it is also well suited to active everyday wear.

However, we still recommend removing the jewellery before washing and sleeping whenever possible. This helps preserve its original shine and beautiful appearance for longer.

To care for stainless steel jewellery:

  • wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing;
  • rinse with clean lukewarm water when necessary;
  • always dry the jewellery thoroughly;
  • avoid strong chemicals and abrasive cleaning products;
  • protect it from scratches and strong impacts.

Waterproof does not mean that jewellery is protected from all chemicals or mechanical damage.

CARE FOR CHADORÉ JEWELLERY

Chadoré jewellery is made from waterproof stainless steel and is suitable for active everyday wear.

Chadoré jewellery withstands normal exposure to water and moisture better than precious metal jewellery.

To help maintain its beautiful appearance:

  • rinse the jewellery with clean water after wearing it in seawater or chlorinated water;
  • dry it with a soft cloth after washing;
  • avoid strong cleaning products;
  • do not clean it with a rough sponge or brush;
  • protect it from scratches and strong impacts.

If a Chadoré piece features stones, crystals or other decorative details, their settings should also be protected from mechanical damage.

CARE FOR BRASS AND BRONZE JEWELLERY

The surface and colour of brass and bronze jewellery may change over time due to moisture, perspiration, cosmetics, air and friction.

To care for fashion jewellery:

  • remove it before washing, exercising and sleeping;
  • avoid contact with water and moisture;
  • protect it from perfume, creams and hairspray;
  • clean it only with a soft, dry cloth;
  • do not rinse or soak it;
  • do not use silver cleaning products;
  • store it in a dry place separately from other jewellery.

CERAMIC

CARE FOR DONDELLA® CERAMIC JEWELLERY

Dondella high-quality ceramic has a smooth surface, is scratch-resistant, allergy-free and requires little maintenance.

To clean ceramic jewellery:

  • wipe it with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth;
  • use clean lukewarm water when necessary;
  • dry the jewellery thoroughly after cleaning;
  • avoid abrasive cleaning products.

Ceramic has very good scratch resistance, and the material itself contains no metal or allergenic compounds.

If a ceramic piece of jewellery includes metal parts, plated details or stones, follow the care instructions for those materials as well.

STONES, CRYSTALS AND PEARLS

CARE FOR JEWELLERY WITH STONES AND CRYSTALS

Gemstones and crystals are delicate decorative elements. Their settings may be damaged by impacts, drops, bending, strong pressure and friction.

When wearing jewellery with stones:

  • always remove the jewellery by holding the metal part rather than pulling on the stone;
  • do not bend rings, earrings or pendants;
  • avoid dropping jewellery onto hard surfaces;
  • do not wear jewellery while exercising or sleeping;
  • avoid contact with chemicals and cosmetic products;
  • do not clean stones with a stiff brush or abrasive product;
  • do not soak jewellery with glued stones in water.

If you notice that a stone or its setting is moving, stop wearing the jewellery immediately. Continued wear may cause the stone to fall out or result in further damage.

Do not attempt to glue the stone yourself or bend the setting. Consult a jeweller for assistance.

CARE FOR JEWELLERY WITH NATURAL STONES

Natural stones vary in hardness and sensitivity. Not all natural stones react to water, heat and cleaning products in the same way.

For jewellery with natural stones:

  • use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning whenever possible;
  • do not use strong chemicals;
  • do not leave jewellery in direct sunlight for extended periods;
  • avoid saunas, hot water and significant temperature changes;
  • protect stones from drops and impacts.

If you are unsure how to clean a particular natural stone, please contact us before using any cleaning product.

CARE FOR PEARL JEWELLERY

Pearls, mother-of-pearl and natural shell are delicate materials of natural origin. They may be damaged by perfume, hairspray, creams, perspiration, cleaning products and acidic substances.

For proper care:

  • put the jewellery on after applying perfume and cosmetic products;
  • wipe pearls with a soft cloth after wearing;
  • do not soak pearl jewellery in water;
  • do not use alcohol or strong cleaning products;
  • do not clean pearls with silver cleaning liquid;
  • store pearls separately from other jewellery;
  • protect the surface of pearls from scratches.

Freshwater pearls may vary slightly in shape, surface and colour. The colour, pattern and light reflection of mother-of-pearl and natural shell may also vary between individual pieces.
These variations are natural characteristics of the materials.
